Colonials look to continue momentum at Delaware State, VCU
KICKING OFF: The George Washington women's soccer squad will hit the road for a pair of matches this week, first wrapping up its non-conference slate at Delaware State on Thursday at 5 p.m. before traveling back down to Richmond on Sunday to face VCU for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials (9-1-2, 5-0-0 A-10) continued their hot streak in conference play on Sunday afternoon, topping Richmond, 1-0, on the road to remain undefeated in Atlantic 10 action. GW held the Spiders to just four shots on the day while recording eight of their own. The squad is outshooting its opponents 220-114 this season.
COMEBACK COLONIALS: Sitting atop the A-10 standings, the Buff and Blue proved their prowess last Thursday with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Massachusetts. After GW established a one-goal lead in the first half, the Minutewomen battled back in the second with a pair of tallies to take the lead with 30 minutes to play. With the clock ticking down, GW had back-to-back chances before it was able to even the score with a goal from Sofia Pavon. In overtime, the Colonials were able to complete their comeback victory when Rachel Sorkenn took a pass from Pavon, found a break in the Minutewomen defense and shot the ball from way out of the box and into the upper-right corner of the goal.
GONE STREAKING: With Sunday's win over Richmond, GW's win streak extends to seven in a row. The last time the squad earned seven consecutive victories was in 2015 when it went a perfect 10-0-0 in conference play en route to the A-10 regular season title.
ROAD WARRIORS: GW sits atop the league with a 5-1-0 record on the road this season, only conceding its season opener at William & Mary. In those games, the Colonials have scored a combined 10 goals and held their opponents to just four.
HOCKESSIN HOMECOMING: A native of Hockessin, Delaware, redshirt senior Megan McCormick is set to make her return to her home state for Thursday's match at Delaware State. The co-captain has started all 12 games in 2019 and has scored a season-high three goals.
ABOUT DELAWARE STATE: The Hornets (0-13) are coming off back-to-back losses to Iona, 2-0, and South Carolina State, 2-1, last week. GW owns the series history, 5-0-0.
ABOUT VCU: The Rams (7-5-1, 1-4 A-10) will look to bounce back in A-10 action this week after suffering losses to La Salle, 1-0, and Fordham, 3-2, last week. VCU holds a 5-3-1 advantage in the series.
