Colonials travel to face Hokies on Saturday
LAST TIME OUT: GW performed well at a pair of quality events last week, highlighted by a Saturday sweep of another ACC opponent Boston College in its Smith Center Pool debut.
On Friday, the Colonials were part of a competitive meet at Navy's Lejeune Hall with the women going 2-2 and the men 1-2 in head-to-head competition. George Aspougalis (100 breast) and the 400 free relay team of Max Forstenhaeusler, Tyler Kawakami, Andrew Cho and Moritz Fath earned wins on the men's side, while victories from Stine Omdahl Petersen (200 breast) and Andrea Moussier (1,000 free) provided the top highlights for the women.
A day later, the men beat the Eagles, 171.5-126.5, boosted by two individual wins apiece from Aspougalis, Cho, Dylan Arzoni and Peter Nachtwey, while the women scored a narrow 155-145 victory, clinching the meet with a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 200 IM paced by a win from Ann Juneau. Moussier, Omdahl Petersen and Andrea Ho were double winners.
BIG ON THE BOARDS:Â GW is coming off a strong diving weekend, led by 2019 A-10 Most Outstanding Diver Nachtwey.
Nachtwey led the Colonials on both boards at Navy before posting season-best scores of 289.58 on 3M and 282.45 on 1M in a pair of wins vs. Boston College. First-year Spencer Bystrom also posted a pair of season-best performances on Saturday, placing third on 1-meter (258.68) and fourth on 3-meter (257.78). Junior Nick Tomczyk was third on 3-meter (258.45).
First-year Caitlin Inall led the women's diving contingent, highlighted by a season-best score of 217.75 to finish third on 1-meter vs. a decorated field at Navy.
KEEP BUILDING:Â For the first time, GW landed atop both A-10 preseason polls. The men were projected to win a fourth straight conference title led by eight returning All-Conference performers, while the women were tabbed co-favorites with Duquesne coming off a runner-up finish in 2019.
SCOUTING VIRGINIA TECH:Â The Hokies, who make their season debut at Saturday's meet, are a program on the rise after the men finished fourth and the women eighth at last season's ACC Championships. They closed the season by sending 11 men and three women to the NCAA Championships.
The men opened this season ranked No. 22 nationally in the TYR/CSCAA national poll.
Last January, GW took part in a multi-team meet hosted by Virginia Tech as part of its tune-up for the A-10 Championships.
COMING UP:Â GW has a break next weekend before resuming its fall schedule by making the short trip to Howard on Nov. 9 for a 1 p.m. start.
