Colonials look for second straight A-10 victory
LAST TIME OUT: Tom Cooklin's first career goal proved to be the difference Wednesday in a 1-0 win at St. Bonaventure. The first-year from England scored on a beautiful volley from 18 yards out in the 74th minute to help the Colonials earn their first conference win of the season.
Goalkeeper Noah Lubin stopped St. Bonaventure's lone shot on goal to record his first career shutout. The Colonials limited the Bonnies to just three total shots and none in the second half.
WHAT'S COOKLIN?: With his goal Wednesday off an assist from Haukur Hilmarsson, Cooklin became the fourth Colonial, and first rookie, to find the net this fall.
The newcomer has been a major factor in GW's midfield, playing 708 minutes over 11 appearances with eight starts. He ranks third on the squad in shots (18) and shots on goal (eight).
WORTH THE WAIT: After being limited by injury early this season, Lubin has earned the first four starts of his career in net.
A former club keeper who joined the Colonials in the spring of 2017, Lubin made his collegiate debut with a seven-save effort in the A-10 opener vs. Rhode Island on Sept. 21. He's continued to perform well as part of a veteran defensive unit, posting 16 saves against five goals allowed over the four starts for a .762 save percentage.
Lubin's lone save at St. Bonaventure was an excellent one. The keeper dove to his left to knock away a dangerous free kick through traffic from Jacob Dyck in the 28th minute. It was GW's fourth clean sheet of the season overall.
Lubin has made great strides between the pipes while keeping a rigorous schedule as a Neuroscience major and aspiring doctor. Read more about Lubin's commitment to academic and athletic excellence here.
SCOUTING DUQUESNE: The Dukes (7-3-1, 2-1 A-10) have had a week off since defeating St. Bonaventure, 4-0, on home turf last Saturday. They are 5-0-1 this season at Rooney Field.
Manel Busquets leads the A-10 with six goals, while Zach Hall and Jack Shearer have netted four scores apiece.
Duquesne holds a 10-9-1 edge in the all-time series, but the Colonials took the most recent meeting with a 1-0 win on the Mount Vernon Campus on Oct. 21, 2017.
UP NEXT: GW starts a three-game homestand next Tuesday with a visit from crosstown foe Howard at 2 p.m. The Colonials will host Davidson for Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 19, in a 2 p.m. kickoff.
