Colonials back home Tuesday to host Howard
PITTSBURGH - GW men's soccer came up short in its bid for its second Atlantic 10 road win of the week, falling 1-0 at Duquesne on Saturday night.
The Dukes prevailed in a defensive battle at Rooney Field thanks to Jack Shearer's 65th-minute goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 65th Minute: Duquesne converted its lone shot on target into a goal. Shearer was in the right place at the right time to finish a rebound off Manel Busquet's attempt that was blocked in front of the net. (Duquesne 1, GW 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- GW finished with a 9-8 edge in total shots and a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks. The Colonials put two tries on goal compared to Duquesne's one.
- The Buff and Blue pushed hard for the equalizer late, racking up three shots and three corner kicks over the game's final 11 minutes. They had a final push snuffed out in the Duquesne box in the closing seconds.
- The first half featured just one shot on frame. In the 32nd minute, GW's Liam Emson had a great look on a header off a corner kick, but Duquesne keeper Robbie McKelvey came up with a strong save.
- Haukur Hilmarsson recorded GW's other shot on goal in the 64th minute.
- Senior Noah Lubin went the distance in the GW net in his fifth start of the season, lowering his goals against average to 1.17.
UP NEXT: GW opens a three-game homestand Tuesday with a visit from Howard at 2 p.m. The Colonials will host Davidson for Senior Day next Saturday in another 2 p.m. kickoff.
