Colonials fell to Howard at the Vern on Tuesday
WASHINGTON - GW men's soccer concluded its non-conference slate Tuesday with a 1-0 loss to Howard on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The visiting Bison took the crosstown battle thanks to a 57th-minute goal by Andres Gomez.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 57th Minute: Gomez scored what turned out to be the game's lone goal. GW keeper Justin Grady came up with the initial save, but the Howard forward stuck with the play and drilled home his own rebound. (Howard 1, GW 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- GW outshot the Bison, 20-7, on the afternoon, including an 8-1 advantage over the opening 45 minutes. The Colonials forced Howard keeper Carlos Caro to make eight saves to preserve the clean sheet. The Buff and Blue also missed converting a penalty kick in the 56th minute.
- GW's eight shots on goal came from seven different Colonials. Tom Cooklin put both of his tries on target.
- The Buff and Blue kept the pressure on Howard's defense, earning 12 corner kicks, as well.
- For the first time this season, GW split time between the pipes. Noah Lubin played the opening half before Grady entered and recorded a pair of saves.
- Ryan Cedeno earned his first career start as part of the GW defense. The first-year from Florida became the 19th Colonial to crack the starting lineup this fall.
UP NEXT: GW will honor seven seniors and two graduate students Saturday before a 2 p.m. kickoff vs. Davidson on Senior Day at the Vern. The Colonials then close their home schedule next Wednesday, Oct. 23, with a 2 p.m. start vs. Saint Joseph's.
