Colonials to host UMass Thursday, travel to Richmond Sunday
KICKING OFF: The George Washington women's soccer squad is set to continue Atlantic 10 action this week, first hosting Massachusetts on Thursday at the GW Soccer Field at 3 p.m. before heading down to Richmond to face the Spiders on Sunday at 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials (7-1-2, 3-0-0 A-10) notched their fifth straight victory on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 shutout win over Rhode Island. GW limited the Rams to just six shots on the day while rattling off 13 of their own and converting off two of them with goals by Rachel Sorkenn.
SOPHOMORE SURGE: The Buff and Blue sophomore class is setting the standard this season and makes up four of the top-five point producers so far in 2019. Maria Pareja paces the squad with 11 points (5g, 1a), a nine-point increase from 2018, while redshirt sophomore Rachel Sorkenn follows closely behind with 10 points (3g, 4a). Sammy Neyman ranks tied for third on the team with six points off of a team-high 6 assists along with Madi Coyne, who rounds out the sophomore top scorers with a career-high three goals.
CENTER BACKS SCORING: GW's center backs, redshirt senior Megan McCormick and sophomore Madi Coyne, have both hit career-highs with three goals apiece so far this season. McCormick's goals came against Liberty, Bucknell, and Fordham, while Coyne has scored against Liberty, UMBC, and Fordham.
SUSTAINED SUCCESS: The Colonials notched their fifth straight victory against Rhode Island on Sunday. With the win, GW remains undefeated in conference play, earning its best start in Atlantic 10 action since 2015 when it went 10-0-0 en route to the regular season title.
ABOUT UMASS: The Minutewomen (5-3-2, 2-1-0 A-10) scored three goals in just over seven minutes to come from down 3-1 in the second half to pick up a 4-3 victory at Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon. Melissa Kossler paces the squad with 23 points (9g, 5a) while Peyton Ryan leads the team between the posts with her 34 saves and 1.82 GAA. Massachusetts owns the 9-18-3 series lead, but the Colonials have topped the Minutewomen in the last three matchups.
ABOUT RICHMOND: The Spiders sit 5-4-2 on the season and 2-1-0 in conference play after falling to La Salle, 2-1, and topping Fordham, 1-0, last week. GW owns the 9-7-1 series edge and enters Sunday's meeting on a seven-match win streak against the Spiders.
