Women’s Soccer Tops UMass to Remain Undefeated in A-10 Play

Sorkenn scores in OT to lift the Colonials to their sixth straight victory
WASHINGTON – Sitting atop the Atlantic 10 standings, the George Washington women's soccer team proved their prowess on Thursday afternoon with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Massachusetts at the GW Soccer Field.
With the win, the Colonials (8-1-2, 4-0-0) notched their sixth straight victory and remained undefeated in conference play, continuing their best start in Atlantic 10 action since 2015 when they went 10-0-0 en route to the regular season title.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 31st Minute - GW broke the deadlock with a goal from sophomore Hannah Zaluski, her first of the season. Allie Nornes ran to meet Maria Pareja, who darted to the far right side of the box to cross the ball. Nornes provided a screen while Zaluski weaved through the Massachusetts defenders and shot the ball into the back of the net. GW 1, UMass 0
• 51st Minute – Massachusetts evened the score with a goal off a corner kick. Ansley Frazier took the corner and positioned the ball right in front of the net, giving Sini Laaksonen the chance to head it in. GW 1, UMass 1
• 64th Minute – The Minutewomen continued to press and were able to get out in front with a goal from Melissa Kossler. Kossler drew keeper Tamaki Machi out of the box and shot the ball into the empty net. UMass 2, GW 1
• 78th Minute – With the clock ticking down, GW had back-to-back chances before it was able to even the score with a tally from Sofia Pavon. Rachel Sorkenn battled through the Minutewomen back line to pass the ball to Pavon, who shot the ball from the left of the box and into the net. GW 2, UMass 2
• 95th Minute – Sorkenn continued her momentum from the game's second half by scoring the game winning goal. Sorkenn took a pass from Pavon, found a break in the Minutewomen defense, and shot the ball from way out of the box and into the upper right hand corner of the goal. GW 3, UMass 2
NOTEWORTHY
• Zaluski, who ranks tied for second on the team with 1,030 minutes played in 2019, scored her first goal of the season against the Minutewomen.
• GW's back line has accounted for seven of the Colonials' 21 goals this season. Megan McCormick and Madi Coyne lead all defenders with a season-high three goals each while Zaluski has one tally.
• The Colonials edged the Minutewomen 19-18 in shots and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
• Keeper Tamaki Machi finished the day with five saves while Massachusetts keeper Peyton Ryan made 11 of her own.
• Sorkenn paced the squad with six shots on the day and leads the squad with 41 on the season.
• With her one goal and one assist, Sorkenn also ranks first on the team with 13 points (4g, 5a).

GW will look to keep its hot streak alive on Sunday when it hits the road to face Richmond at 3 p.m.
