Pair of Colonials honored after opening weekend of MAWPC play
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - George Washington's Andras Levai and Matt Taylor have claimed Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Association weekly honors for their efforts on the opening weekend of conference play.
Levai was tabbed MAWPC Player of the Week after posting a team-high 10 goals and six assists in three victories, while Taylor landed Defensive Player of the Week honors in recognition of his sterling performance in net for the 19th-ranked Colonials.
Levai started the weekend by powering the Colonials to a 9-8 win over No. 16 Fordham, scoring the game's final four goals to complete the comeback. The junior from Hungary finished with five goals and two assists vs. the Rams.
Levai also posted two goals and four assists in a 14-8 win over Wagner and then finished the weekend with three more goals, plus three steals, in a 19-6 victory at La Salle. He leads the Colonials with 79 points via 55 goals and 24 assists on the season.
It's the third MAWPC Player of the Week award of Levai's career. He was honored twice last fall, most recently taking the honor following GW's NCAA Tournament win over Princeton.
Taylor continued an excellent season between the pipes, totaling 30 saves against 16 goals allowed across the three road victories, good for a .652 save percentage.
The graduate student from New Zealand's best effort came vs. Fordham when he posted 11 saves, plus an assist and a steal. He made nine saves in the victory over Wagner and then tallied 10 more stops against four goals allowed in the weekend finale at La Salle.
It's Taylor's first MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week honor in nearly three years. The veteran netminder was last recognized on Oct. 10, 2016.
GW (12-3, 3-0 MAWPC) has this weekend off before returning to MAWPC action on Oct. 11 with La Salle visiting the Colonials at The St. James in Springfield, Va.
