Colonials to wrap up road swing at the site of the 2019 EAGL Championship

LEADING OFF: After back-to-back competitions over the weekend, the George Washington gymnastics team will turn its attention to its third straight road meet on Sunday when it faces New Hampshire at 1 p.m. in Lundholm Gymnasium, the site of the 2019 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship.Â

AT THE TOP: Fifth-year co-captain Alex Zois continues to dominate in all-around competition and has earned the top spot on the podium in all three meets this season. After posting a 39.050 in the season opener, Zois continued her momentum over the weekend with a 38.925 at Pittsburgh and 38.950 at West Virginia. Her 38.975 average in the all-around ranks first in EAGL and 45th nationally.

IN THE ZONE-A: After making her Buff and Blue debut at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational, first-year Olivia Zona has solidified her spot in GW's vault and floor lineups. At Pittsburgh, the Shrewsbury, Mass., native took home the floor title with a season-high 9.850 performance. The next day at West Virginia, Zona surpassed her personal best on vault for the second straight meet with a team-high score of 9.750, a .250 increase from her score at the season opener.

.025 TRACKER: Each week, the gymnastics squad sets individual goals in practice to improve their routines by .025. Along with Zona, nine Colonials either matched or surpassed their season highs this past weekend. Four gymnasts also hit new career highs. Most notably, after matching her personal-best score of 9.775 on beam at Pittsburgh on Saturday, fifth-year Brooke Bray upped her game on Sunday at West Virginia, earning a 9.800. Also recording career highs over the weekend were Anna Warhol (vault, 9.775), Katya Karpova (beam, 9.750), and Chloe Vitoff (vault, 9.750).

A LOOK AT THE LEAGUE: The Colonials currently sit fifth in the EAGL standings with an average score of 194.092. North Carolina tops the league (194.658 avg.), followed by NC State (194.619 avg.), Pittsburgh (194.550 avg.), and New Hampshire (194.444 avg.). Towson ranks sixth with an average team-score of 192.048. GW has posted its highest scores on beam and floor so far in 2019 and ranks third on each event with average scores of 48.550 and 48.825, respectively.Â

ABOUT UNH: The Wildcats are coming off of a season-high, first-place performance at Yale where they finished with a team score of 195.375. Senior Danielle Mulligan registered a personal-best 39.275 in the all-around to boost UNH to its fifth straight victory, earning EAGL Gymnast of the Week honors in the process.

ON THE HORIZON: Following their meet at New Hampshire, the Colonials will return home on Feb. 8 to host UNH, Yale, and William & Mary for their annual Pink Meet. Prior to march-outs at 7 p.m., GW will host a wine tasting with light hors d'oeuvres inside the Colonials Club of the Smith Center. The cost is $15 and includes the single-meet ticket along with an open bar with a selection of wines for fans of age.
