Men’s Basketball Stumbles at Mason, 62-55

Terry Nolan Jr. scored a team-high 15 points, while DJ Williams and Justin Mazzulla added 14 apiece
FAIRFAX, Va. -- The George Washington men's basketball was on the road on Saturday night, and the short trip to Fairfax, Va., allowed for many Buff and Blue faithful to infiltrate George Mason's Eagle Bank Arena. With both of the Colonials' wins in A-10 play coming on the road this season, GW was looking for some road cooking close to home.
From the tip it looked like GW might enjoy the same success against the Patriots that it has historically seen. The Colonials entered play with a 9-1 advantage in contests between the nearby foes since George Mason entered the A-10, and 19-3 all-time. After the Patriots went scoreless for the first five minutes of the game, with GW vaulting to an opening 8-0 surge, the large Patriot crowd was relatively silenced.
The lead wouldn't last long though as the game turned into a closely contested affair. George Mason entered play leading the A-10 and given the Colonials' road success in the A-10 this season it figured the game would come down to the end.
That's exactly what happened as Mason's struggles from the free throw line gave GW every chance for another of its vaunted second half comebacks. After trailing by as many as 15 in the second, GW clawed its way back in it when Mason couldn't put it away.
Fifteen Mason missed freebies gave the Colonials a shot, and trailing 56-50 with the ball and :38 seconds to go, a bang-bang play in the lane saw Maceo Jack called for a charge while GW yearned for a blocking call, but it wasn't to be. The Patriots extended their edge to nine and all GW could do was turn their sights to the revenge game at Smith Center in the regular season finale on March 9.
Terry Nolan Jr. led the way in the scoring column for GW with 15 points, while Justin Mazzulla and DJ Williams each netted 14, but the Colonials couldn't get anyone else above four points. Javier Langarica had a game-high 12 rebounds to go with a team-high tying three assists and game-high five blocks, though in the defensive affair, Mason just made a few more shots when it mattered most.
Otis Livingston II led the Patriots with 15 points, while Justin Kier and Jared Reuter notched 11 and 10, respectively. Reuter was particularly effective passing in the post with his game-high tying four assists.
