TIPPING OFF: After playing its last three games against teams at the top of the Atlantic 10 standings, as the Colonials went toe-to-toe with Duquesne (5-2 A-10 record), Davidson (6-1) and George Mason (7-1), with the latter two on the road, the GW men's basketball team returns home to face the Fordham Rams on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Charles E. LAST TIME OUT: As they did in an overtime loss to Duquesne and an 11-point defeat at Davidson, the Colonials made it a closely contested affair at George Mason on Saturday night. GW threw the first punch in establishing an early 8-0 lead, holding the Patriots scoreless for the first five minutes, before trailing 27-25 at the half. However, 13 second-half turnovers plagued GW and allowed Mason to open a 15-point lead at its largest. While the Colonials got back within six with a little over a minute to play, the deficit was too big to overcome in an eventual 62-55 loss. Terry Nolan Jr. led the way in the scoring column for GW with 15 points, while Justin Mazzulla and DJ Williams each netted 14, but the Colonials couldn't get anyone else above four points. Javier Langarica had a game-high 12 rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
SERIES HISTORY: GW, which has won the last eight meetings in a row, and 11 of the last 12, leads the all-time series 27-6 including a 13-0 mark at home. The Colonials defeated the Rams twice last season, taking a 72-56 victory on Senior Night and a 78-72 win in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
MORE FROM MAZZULLA: Heading into Wednesday night's game, Mazzulla has scored in double figures in 10 of the last 11 to increase his season average to 10.3 which ranks third on the team. A sophomore tri-captain, Mazzulla has significantly upped his production from a season ago when he averaged 2.6 points across 33 games (11 starts). He also leads the team in assists (3.2) and steals (1.2), and is shooting a team-best .423 from 3-point range in conference play.
TIP-INS: Redshirt junior DJ Williams continues to pace GW in scoring (13.2) and double-figure scoring games (14, including four straight) … Nolan leads the team in rebounding (5.5) and is averaging 7.4 in league games, including four games with double-figure boards … the 6-foot-2 guard has two double-doubles (at Saint Joseph's and at La Salle) and narrowly missed a third at George Mason (15 points, nine rebounds) … GW's entire sophomore class has been in the starting lineup for the last 12 games … GW's three overtime games this season (1-2 record) are its most since the 2008-09 season (2-1 record).
