Justin Mazzulla and DJ Williams scored 15 points apiece
DAVIDSON, N.C. – After opening conference play with wins in their first two road games, defeating both Saint Joseph's and La Salle in comeback fashion, the GW men's basketball team faced their stiffest test yet on Wednesday night when they took on the league's second-place team in the Davidson Wildcats. Unfortunately for the Colonials, the success experienced in the City of Brotherly Love didn't extend south to North Carolina, as the visitors were dealt a 73-62 defeat.
Playing in an arena where the Colonials have yet to win – as Davidson improved to 5-0 at home against GW since it joined the Atlantic 10 – the game was nip and tuck nearly throughout. The teams were separated by just a possession for the majority but each time GW threatened to tie or take the lead, Davidson had an answer.
After Davidson got out to an early 17-9 lead, the Colonials climbed back in it thanks to a perfect 10-of-10 showing at the charity stripe in the first half, with Javier Langarica knocking down all six of his attempts. When Maceo Jack knocked down two freebies with 3:00 left in the half the deficit was down to just one, but the Wildcats scored the final six points of the half to take a 36-29 advantage into the intermission.
Davidson, which came in tops in the Atlantic 10 by averaging 9.4 made 3-pointers a game, nearly reached that mark by halftime. The Wildcats knocked down 8-of-17 attempts in a balanced first half effort that saw five players connect on a triple. Still, the Colonials found themselves within a possession once again when they opened the second half on a 11-6 run, trailing just 42-40 after Justin Mazzulla hit his third triple of the game. Once again, though, Davidson responded with a 6-0 run to pad its lead and though GW would later get back within four, it never truly threatened.
KiShawn Pritchett led a Davidson attack that saw all five starters score in double figures with 17 points (7-10 FGs, 3-5 3s) as the Wildcats improved to 14-5 overall and 5-1 in the A-10, along with a perfect 10-0 home record. Preseason First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection Kellan Grady was mostly kept in check as the sophomore guard hit just 6-of-18 shots to finish with 16 points.
For the Colonials, Mazzulla and DJ Williams tied with a team-high 15 points apiece. Terry Nolan Jr. snagged double-figure rebounds for the fourth time in league play with his game-high 10 rebounds to help GW finish with a 37-29 advantage on the glass.
Another road game awaits the Colonials, this time in nearby Fairfax, Va., as GW takes on George Mason Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
