Colonials to face host Hokies, Cincinnati and JMU on Saturday
The Colonials will battle the host Hokies, Cincinnati and James Madison (women only) at Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, Va., with the action starting at 11 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT: GW defended the District last Saturday with sweeps of Georgetown and American. The Colonials used a big finish, including a pair of wins in the meet-ending 200-yard freestyle relay, to hold off the host Hoyas.
Gemma Atherley picked up three victories on the day, highlighted by a pair of pool-record swims, to earn Atlantic 10 Women's Performer of the Week honors. Tommi Wolst posted individual wins in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley, plus a runner-up finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, to claim the men's top weekly award.
Isabela Patino, a first-year from California, won her second A-10 Rookie of the Week award after recording victories in both butterfly events, including a career-best performance in the 200 fly (2:02.87). Classmate Courtney Sicinski also earned a pair of individual wins, taking both breaststroke events.
DIVING IN: GW enjoyed a strong day on the diving boards at Georgetown, led by victories from Peter Nachtwey and Jake Ortiz.
Nachtwey set a McCarthy Pool record with a score of 352.35 to lead a sweep of the top three spots for the Buff and Blue in the 3-meter competition, while Ortiz took 1-meter with 289.20 to edge Nachtwey (284.90).
Nick Tomczyk earned a season-best 263.40 to take third on 3-meter, and first-year Nick Malloy recorded a career-high 256.15 to score in the 1-meter competition.
Gabriella Arendes paced the Colonials in both women's diving events, including a fourth-place finish on the 3-meter board with a season-best score of 266.20. Gillian Chowske posted a pair of season-best efforts, as well.
SCOUTING VIRGINIA TECH: The Hokies returned from winter break last weekend with a pair of losses to nationally ranked Virginia.
It was the first loss of the season in six dual meets for the Virginia Tech men, who were the first team outside the top 25 in the latest TYR/CSCAA national poll. The women own dual-meet wins over a pair of previous GW opponents in Penn State and Pittsburgh.
SCOUTING CINCINNATI: The Bearcats claimed their first AAC men's title last season and finished runner-up on the women's side at the conference meet.
This season, Cincinnati is unbeaten in dual-meet action. Both teams improved to 4-0 last Saturday with comfortable wins over crosstown rival Xavier.
SCOUTING JAMES MADISON: The defending CAA women's champion Dukes return to racing for the first time since mid-November when they finished third out of five teams at the Liberty Invitational.
James Madison won six out of seven in head-to-head competition in the fall, including an October win over defending A-10 champion Duquesne.
COMING UP: GW has about a month to prepare for the A-10 Championships, which run Feb. 20-23 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
