Colonials set for tri-meet vs. local foes Saturday
LAST TIME OUT: The women's squad headed into break with a 133-71 win over Atlantic 10 foe Richmond on Nov. 30 at The St. James sports complex in Springfield, Va. Isabela Patino led the way with wins in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle en route to A-10 Rookie of the Week honors.
Before that, the Colonials were in action at the Queens University Fall Frenzy in North Carolina, where they finished runner-up to the host Royals on both sides. Jackie Torrez (400 IM, 200 fly), Moritz Fath (200 free, 500 free) and Emils Pone (200 back) picked up individual victories, headlining a slew of excellent swims at the three-day meet.
MAKING A SPLASH: GW's newcomers have made quite an impact already this season, combining to win six A-10 Rookie of the Week awards. Patino joined Andrea Moussier (three wins) and Dylan Arzoni (two wins) in the club of Colonials who've been recognized. The Buff and Blue earned at least one weekly award after each weekend of competition in the fall.
Peter Nachtwey holds the program record for most Rookie of the Week honors after winning four times last season.
Eight first-years -- Patino, Moussier, Arzoni, Rebecca Smolcic, Grace Olivardia, Courtney Sicinski, James Torrez and Josh Legge -- have posted swims that rank on the program's all-time top 10 list already this season.
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN: Georgetown put together a 2-1 record in dual-meet action on the men's side in the fall with the women at 1-3. Four Hoyas took part in the U.S. Winter National Championships last month with Drew Carbone qualifying for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 and 200 back.
GW split with the Hoyas as part of a tri-meet last January with the men coming out on top, 164-78, and the women falling in a close one, 127-115.
SCOUTING AMERICAN: The Eagles are 4-3 on the women's side in head-to-head competition this season and 0-7 on the men's side. They were most recently in action at the George Mason Invitational on Nov. 15-17 with the men in seventh place and the women eighth.
GW swept American last season with the men winning, 192-47, and the women taking a 158-82 victory.
COMING UP: GW is back in action on Jan. 19 at Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Virginia with a tri-meet against host Virginia Tech and Cincinnati.
