Colonials take on No. 13 NC State on Thursday and Maryland on Sunday
KICKING OFF: The George Washington women's soccer team will face a tough pair of opponents on the road this weekend, first traveling to Raleigh, N.C. to face No. 13 NC State on Thursday (7 p.m.) before heading up to Maryland to take on the Terps on Sunday (7 p.m.).
LAST TIME OUT: After opening the season on a four-match win streak, the Colonials (4-1-0) held No. 11 Georgetown scoreless through the first half of play, but a late second half Hoya goal proved to be the difference maker as GW was edged 1-0 last Thursday.
TOPPING THE A-10: With three matches left to play on their non-conference slate, the Colonials share the top spot in the Atlantic 10 with La Salle. Alexis Williams also paces the conference with nine points and ranks tied-for-first with four goals on the season. In addition, Sofia Pavon shares the conference lead with a trio of assists and keeper Anna Tapen sits second with 27 saves and third with a .900 save percentage.
ABOUT NC STATE: The Wolfpack wrapped up a two-match road swing on Sunday evening with a 3-1 victory over No. 20 Princeton. With its second win over a top 20 opponent this season, NC State remains undefeated with a 5-0-1 record, its best start since 2008 when the squad went undefeated through six matches.
ABOUT MARYLAND: The Terps (2-3-1) were just edged by Drexel, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. Jarena Harmon leads the squad with six points (3g) and keeper Rachel Egyed leads the team with 17 saves and a 1.04 GAA. Maryland will host UCF on Thursday before taking on the Colonials on Sunday.
COLONIAL CONNECTION: Head coach Michelle Demko was a decorated member of the Maryland soccer team from 1992-95. The two-year captain was voted MVP by her team, earned first-team All-ACC honors, and has her name etched into the Maryland record books with records in single-season shots (3rd, 81, 1995), career-shots (22nd, 112) and game-winning goals (22nd, 4).
