Former A-10 standout joins GW coaching staff
WASHINGTON – George Washington softball has added former Saint Louis standout Alex Nickel as a volunteer assistant coach, head coach Shane Winkler announced Monday.
"I'm excited to have Alex round out our staff," Winkler said. "Her experience as a student-athlete in the A-10 will be extremely valuable. More importantly, her energy and passion for the game is going to help as we look to continue building a championship culture here at GW."
Nickel joins the Colonials for their first season under Winkler after spending last spring as an assistant coach at St. John's College High School in the District.
Before that, Nickel excelled on the field in the Atlantic 10, graduating from Saint Louis in 2017 as one of the most decorated student-athletes in program history.
The shortstop was selected to the A-10 All-Conference First Team and the NFCA All Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team as a senior. She was also an NFCA first team all-region pick as a sophomore in 2015 and a member of the A-10 All-Rookie and All-Championship teams in 2014.
A native of Illinois, Nickel remains the Billikens' all-time leader in a host of categories, including batting average (.347), home runs (30), total bases (349) and runs (168).
Nickel also shined in the classroom at Saint Louis. She was selected to the A-10 All-Academic Team in 2017 and earned NFCA Academic All-American recognition three times. She holds a degree in Emergency Management and is currently pursuing a master's in Emergency and Disaster Management.
