Pair honored for play at Princeton Invitational
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- George Washington's Atakan Destici and Austin Pyrch have claimed Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference weekly honors for their play at the Princeton Invitational.
Destici was named MAWPC Player of the Week after posting a team-leading 10 goals in three games, while Pyrch picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors from the conference for his work in net.
A junior from Turkey, Destici earned his second conference honor in as many weeks after leading the 18th-ranked Colonials to a 2-1 mark, including a win over No. 16 California Baptist. He was named Defensive Player of the Week after the season-opening Navy Open.
Destici scored three goals and added three steals in GW's 8-7 victory over Cal Baptist before netting four goals in a 17-5 win over Iona. To close the weekend, he recorded three goals, two assists, a steal and two ejections drawn in a battle to the finish with No. 9 Harvard in a rematch from last season's NCAA Tournament.
Pyrch earned his first MAWPC weekly honor after totaling 30 saves over the three games, including seven in the win over Cal Baptist. The senior from Texas then held Iona scoreless in the first half of a 17-5 win over Iona before making a season-high 13 stops in Saturday's 12-11 loss to No. 9 Harvard.
Nick Schroeder, a first-year from California, was honored on the Rookie of the Week Honor Roll after finishing the tournament with four goals and four steals.
The Colonials (6-1) are back in action this weekend on the West Coast at the Aggie Roundup hosted by UC Davis, starting with another matchup against Cal Baptist on Friday at 6 p.m.
