Volleyball Holds On For First Win of the Year

Colonials have now won five straight five-set matches dating back to 2017
PEORIA, Ill. – GW volleyball claimed the first two sets in Friday's match against Toledo and eventually pulled out a five-set victory (25-23, 25-17, 24-26, 23-25, 15-12) for its first triumph of the campaign in the opening match of the CEFCU Invitational.
Key Stats
• Sophomore Marianna Warren recorded her second straight game with double-digit kills, tallying 15 while hitting a team-high .355.
• Junior Skylar Iott registered her fourth career double-double, and second in a row, with 13 kills and 15 digs.
• Junior Jaimeson Lee also notched a second straight double-double (15th career) with 47 assists and a new career-high 22 digs. The 47 helpers were one off a career best.
• The incredibly even match featured GW (1-2) narrowly outhitting Toledo (0-4), .120 (54k-33e-175a) to .111 (53k-32e-189a).
• Each team had six aces and 51 assists. GW had the edge in digs, 91-80, while Toledo earned the advantage in blocks, 8.0-5.0.
How it Happened
Set 1: GW 25, Toledo 23
• Both teams posted their best attacking set of the match in the opening stanza with Toledo holding a .265 (12k-3e-34a) to .231 (16k-7e-39a) edge
• GW found itself trailing by as many as six at 17-11, but went on a 9-1 run that featured six straight points with Lee on serve.
• With the set tied at 23, GW earned the final pair of points via a combo block by Iott and senior Alexis Lete followed by a kill from Lee.
Set 2: GW 25, Toledo 17
• The Colonials used the momentum to spring out to an 8-1 advantage in the second set, a lead they would never relinquish.
• GW's lead swelled to 11 at 19-8 before Toledo attempted to work its way back into the set.
• A pair of late kills from Warren nullified the comeback effort as GW entered intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Set 3: Toledo 26, GW 24
• A back-and-forth third set featured nine ties and five lead changes that ultimately went in favor of the Rockets.
• Toledo recorded a match-high 17 kills in the set and rallied from a 17-13 deficit to stave off defeat.
• GW had a chance to end the match leading 24-23, but yielded three straight points to push the match to a fourth set.
Set 4: Toledo 25, GW 23
• Toledo jumped out to an early 7-3 lead and led throughout the majority of the set.
• Trailing 21-13, GW closed the gap to as little as one at 24-23, thanks in part to four kills from Warren.
• However, the Rockets claimed the final point of the set to fourth a decisive fifth stanza.
Set 5: GW 15, Toledo 12
• After an early tussle led to a 6-6 stalemate, the Colonials ran off five straight points to provide the necessary breathing room.
• Four of the points in the decisive run came via Toledo attack errors prior to a kill from Warren that made it 11-6.
• Toledo surged back to crawl within one at 13-12. However, a kill from Iott and another Rocket attack error earned GW its first victory of the year.
