Colonials seek to extend season-opening win streak
GW can improve to 3-0 for the first time since 1996 with a win over the Mountain Hawks (0-2). Join the Colonials for their annual Kickin' It at the Vern celebration, which includes a free cookout.
LAST TIME OUT: GW netted five goals before halftime and rolled to a 6-0 romp over local rival American last Monday. Oscar Haynes Brown recorded a hat trick before the break and finished with four goals and an assist in the victory. Drini Redzepi set a career high with three assists for the Buff and Blue, while Dylan Lightbourn and Gabriel Seemungal also found the net.
SCORING SENSATION: Haynes Brown is the national leader in both goals and points, totaling 15 points via seven goals and an assist through two games. The sophomore from England has already surpassed his goal and point totals from last season when he led GW with six goals and 14 points. GW hadn't recorded a hat trick since 2010 before Haynes Brown did it in back-to-back games.
Right now, Haynes Brown has six more points and three more goals than anyone else in the country. No one in the Atlantic 10 has more than four points.
GOALS GALORE: As a team, GW sits second nationally in scoring at 4.5 goals per game. The Colonials' six goals against American were their most in a single game since head coach Craig Jones took over in 2012. With nine goals on 35 shots through two games, they are off to their best offensive start since they scored 10 goals in back-to-back wins to begin the 1984 season.
Ten different Colonials have recorded at least one point so far. Redzepi and Joshua Yurasits are tied for the A-10 lead with three assists apiece.
SCOUTING LEHIGH: The Mountain Hawks dropped to 0-2 with their 2-1 overtime loss to Drexel on Monday night. Mark Forrest, the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, has factored in on both of Lehigh's goals with a goal and an assist.
Last season, GW won at Lehigh, 1-0, with Brady O'Connor scoring the lone goal in the 57th minute off a cross from Koby Osei-Wusu.
COMING UP: GW hits the road for the first time next week with a trip to Rhode Island for games against Brown (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Providence (Sunday, 1 p.m.).
