Colonials make road trip to Rhode Island next week
WASHINGTON – George Washington men's soccer had its season-opening win streak snapped Saturday, falling 1-0 to Lehigh.
Aiming to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 1996, the Colonials (2-1) fell behind in the 18th minute on a penalty kick and couldn't produce the equalizer against the Mountain Hawks (1-2) at GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 18th Minute: Lehigh earned a penalty kick after a foul in the box battling for an incoming free kick and took advantage. Mark Forrest slotted his shot in the bottom right corner of the net for what turned out to be the game's lone goal. (Lehigh 1, GW 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- After scoring nine goals in its first two games, GW had its chances Saturday. The Colonials outshot Lehigh, 14-12, and forced Lehigh goalkeeper Will Smith to make six saves to earn the shutout. They spent most of the second half on the attack with Lehigh down a man after a red card.
- GW's Oscar Haynes Brown, who leads the nation with seven goals and 15 points, put three of his team-high five shots on goal Saturday.
- Thor Arne Höfs made three saves in net for the Colonials.
- It was the third straight home game to open the season for the Colonials, who will play six of their next seven contests on the road.
UP NEXT: GW is set for a road trip to Rhode Island next week. The Colonials open with a Friday night game at Brown before a Sunday matchup at Providence.
