Volleyball Falls in Season Opener at Howard

Colonials unable to overcome hot-hitting Bison in setback
WASHINGTON – GW Volleyball dealt with a strong attack from the host Howard Bison, falling in straight sets (19-25, 21-25, 20-25) in the opening match of the 2018 season on Friday night at Burr Gymnasium.
Key Stats
• Junior Skylar Iott led GW with 10 kills while sophomore Marianna Warren tallied eight kills and hit a team-best .267.
• First-year libero Bella Bowman played strong defense in her Colonials debut, pacing the squad with 11 digs.
• Junior Jaimeson Lee recorded 22 assists, seven digs, and a kill in an all-around effort.
• The Bison committed just eight errors in the match and hit .342 (35k-8e-79a) as a team compared to GW swinging .042 (31k-27e-95a).
How it Happened
Set 1: Howard 25, GW 19
• Howard hit a robust .370 (14k-4e-27a) in the first set with only four errors compared to GW's .000 (9k-9e-29a)
• After neither team was able to create separation in the early going, the Bison utilized a 7-2 run to claim a five-point lead at 17-12 they would not relinquish.
Set 2: Howard 25, GW 21
• GW used an early 5-1 run to open its largest lead of the match at 12-9.
• However, the Bison would claim eight of the next 11 points to surge ahead for good in the set.
• The Colonials closed to within a point at 22-21, but Howard scored the final three points to claim the set.
• Howard continued its strong swinging, hitting .250 (9k-3a-24a) to GW's .067 (12k-10e-30a) in set two.
Set 3: Howard 25, GW 20
• In similar fashion to the first two sets, Howard opened up a small advantage in the middle stages that they would not relinquish.
• GW recorded four services aces in the set, including a pair from junior Jordan Young.
• Howard committed just one error in the set and held off a late GW charge to secure the sweep.
