Volleyball Drops Home Opener to American, 3-1

Iott registers first double-double of the year with 20 kills and 12 digs
WASHINGTON – In its home opener on Saturday at the Smith Center, GW Volleyball pushed perennial power American to the brink before eventually bowing out in four sets, 17-25, 23-25, 25-22, 20-25.
Key Stats
• Junior Skylar Iott led the Colonials (0-2) in kills for the second straight match, recording her first double-double of the year with 20 kills and 12 digs.
• Sophomore Callie Fauntleroy made her season debut and shined with four kills and five blocks assists in just two sets of action.
• Junior Jaimeson Lee dished out 43 assists and added 14 digs and six block assists.
• First-year libero Bella Bowman was critical for the Colonials defensive attack with a team-high 31 digs.

How it Happened
Set 1: American 25, GW 17
• American came out strong, hitting .351 (16k-3e-37a) as a team to nab the first set.
• With the score tied 9-9, the Eagles recorded four straight points to pull ahead for good, leading by as many as 11.
• Iott notched six of her team-high 20 kills in the opening stanza.
Set 2: American 25, GW 23
• GW came out hot, using two service aces to open a 5-1 advantage. However, AU scored the next six points to assume the lead for good.
• The Colonials closed to within 24-23 on a kill by Iott but were unable to convert on a marathon point in what eventually determined the set.
Set 3: GW 25, American 22
• After intermission, the Colonials polished off their first set win of the year, headlined by five team blocks.
• The third set featured 17 ties and eight lead changes before GW went ahead for good on a kill from Fauntleroy to make it 22-21.
• Fauntleroy had three block assists in the set and also hit .286 (3k-1e-7a) in her first action of the season.
Set 4: American 25, GW 20
• Both teams hit incredibly well in the final set with American hitting .448 (16k-3e-29a) and GW swinging a season-best .214 (11k-5e-28a).
• GW rallied late to put pressure on the Eagles but were unable to overcome a late eight-point deficit.
• Lee recorded 10 assists in the stanza, six of which went to Iott, who hit .333 (6k-2e-12a) in the fourth.
