Softball Heads to Rhode Island

Because of inclement weather in the forecast, the schedule has shifted, and the series will begin with a doubleheader Sunday, starting at 2 p.m. The teams will finish the set Monday with a 1 p.m. first pitch at URI Softball Complex.
The Colonials (22-12, 2-4 A-10) opened A-10 play with a pair of home series as part of an 18-game homestand and now will play 11 of their final 17 conference games on the road.
LAST TIME OUT: GW came up short against Georgetown on Wednesday, falling, 4-0, in a non-conference contest on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Sidney Bloomfield reached base twice with a walk and a single and stole two bases for the Colonials, who were limited to five hits in the shutout. Ashley Pilcher provided two innings of scoreless relief in an outing that matched her longest of the season.
ON THE CLIMB: With 26 career home runs, sophomore Jenna Cone is already tied with Jackie Yaniga ('08) for second on GW's all-time list. Victoria Valos ('15) is the Colonials' career leader with 36 long balls.
Cone set a program record with 18 homers in 52 games last season en route to A-10 Rookie of the Year honors. This season, she leads the squad with eight more in 33 games.
FAST STARTERS: GW is 14-0 when its scores in the first inning this season.
In all, the Colonials have outscored their opponents, 37-15, in the opening inning, including an eight-run first in an 8-3 victory over New Mexico on Feb. 23.
SCOUTING RHODE ISLAND: The Rams (7-21, 2-3) were swept in a two-game series at La Salle last weekend before picking up a non-conference win over Holy Cross on Thursday. This series will mark their home debut for the season.
Erica Robles (.333, 17 RBIs) and Kylie Shivery (.317, 17 RBIs) are Rhode Island's top hitters, while four different pitchers have earned wins in the circle, led by Becca Rogers (2.67 ERA in 73 1/3 innings).
GW took two of three from the Rams last season in the District, including a doubleheader sweep on Senior Day.
ON DECK: GW celebrates Alumnae Weekend when it hosts La Salle. The series starts with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 and finishes with a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday, April 15. Former Colonials can register for the festivities here.
