Sailing against one of the most competitive women's fleets of the season, the GW sailing team took a sixth-place finish among 18 teams at the Dellnbaugh Women's Trophy last weekend.
The Colonials were led by a fifth-place finish in B Division, where skipper Riley Legault and crews Alexandra Fayer (races 1-4, 9-17) and Sarah Noyes (races 5-8) combined for seven top-six finishes including three first-place runs.
GW finished strong in A Division over the final four races to vault up from 15th place to ninth. The duo of Miranda Bakos and Belle Strachan won race 14A before closing with finishes of fifth, fourth, and fifth. Crew Kia Olsson also contributed to an effort that saw GW finish in the top-half of the field in 10 of 17 races.
"On Saturday it was pretty breezy and the girls sailed well in the conditions," said assistant coach Catherine Shanahan. "On Sunday we had a good run of Riley and Miranda finishing the regatta really strong, showing up ready to race. It was definitely tricky conditions, really mentally challenging, and the girls stepped up which was impressive to see. They really put together a strong finish for the event.
LOOK AHEAD
"This was the last big intersectional that we'll sail before our conference championship so it was a really good way to end interconference play for the semester," said Shanahan. "I'm excited to see how they do going forward but overall it was a really strong finish for both A and B Division."
GW returns to Team Racing this weekend as the Colonials head to the Prosser Trophy, which serves as the conference championship and qualifier for the national championship.
