Men's Basketball Taps Out vs. Saint Louis

WASHINGTON -- In an ending unbefitting for the glorious career that Yuta Watanabe enjoyed at GW, the senior star was forced to watch the final eight-plus minutes from the bench after being taken down hard attempting to score in a physical affair in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championships. While Watanabe tried to gut out a painful attempt to run and try to re-enter the fray, a tender ankle wouldn't allow it and his decorated collegiate career came to an end at Capital One Arena, an NBA-venue that the multi-faceted swingman aspires to frequent at the next level in the years to come.
Ultimately GW fell 70-63 to the Billikens in a game that will only be remembered for who couldn't be on the floor when it mattered most. Watanabe finished with 11 points, three blocks and a steal in the culmination of a career that netted A-10 Defensive Player of the Year honors and All-Conference Third Team accolades in his standout senior season.
Looking to next season, GW adds transfers DJ Williams (Illinois) and Armel Potter (Charleston Southern), along with a highly-touted incoming freshmen class consisting of Shandon Brown, Marcus Littles and Mezie Offurum to a returning group of student-athletes who gained invaluable experience during a season in which the Colonials tested themselves at every opportunity during a grueling non-conference slate before the rigors of conference play began.
Patrick Steeves, Bo Zeigler and Jack Granger leave GW having all left a legacy in Buff and Blue. Steeves, an A-10 All-Academic honoree this season, put up career-best numbers in virtually every category this season, while fellow grad student Zeigler leaves behind a highlight reel of dunks in the Buff and Blue with his trademark Detroit toughness. Granger, a former three-year team manager, walked on this season and put his name in GW lore with a three-pointer against Richmond in his penultimate home game to put the Colonials over the 100-point mark.
GW finishes the season with a record of 15-18.
