Sailing Qualifies for Prosser Trophy

GW sailing officially qualified for the Team Race conference championship with a fourth-place finish at the Szambecki Team Race, one of three regattas the Colonials competed in over the weekend.
GW also took a third-place finish at the Hanbury Team Race and fourth at the Seahawk Team Race in the final weekend competing in that discipline before chasing the Prosser Trophy in two weeks.
SZAMBECKI TEAM RACE AT OLD DOMINION (4th of 10)
The Colonials took fourth place in the regatta, which also put them at fourth place in the final Team Race league standings to officially qualify for the Prosser Trophy. GW overcame an 0-3 start by going 6-0 to finish the round robin and qualify among the top four to go into a second round robin. There, GW started 2-1 before a heavy breeze blew in and saw the Colonials drop their final three races.
"It was great for the team to rise up after a really tough start," said head coach Billy Martin. "Adversity is usually a good motivator and it was good to see the team not give up and really fight and end up knocking off Charleston to get in the top four. Once we got there, our first round robin went really well; we went 2-1 and had a really close last one against Navy. The breeze really picked up to about 25 knots, and we struggled in the last round robin, but regardless, it was really good reps against really good teams. We showed some weaknesses in the big breeze, but it's nothing we can't work on."
HANBURY TEAM RACE AT CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT (3rd of 6)
In four full round robins, GW posted an 11-9 record to finish behind Georgetown (20-0) and Jacksonville (12-8), while topping Navy (9-11), host Christopher Newport (6-14) and Old Dominion (2-18).
SEAHAWK TEAM RACE AT ST. MARY'S (4th of 6)
GW went 2-3 in each of the two round robins to finish tied for third with a 4-6 overall mark. Via head-to-head results, that left the Colonials with a fourth-place finish in the six-team field.
LOOK AHEAD
With a break from Team Racing, GW returns its attention to fleet racing with the Dellnbaugh Women's Regatta (March 31-April 1), ahead of the Prosser Trophy (April 7-8).
"I'm excited about the Prosser and how this team has developed top to bottom, not only having one good team but three good teams," said Martin. "I think it bodes well for the future."
