RADFORD, Va. â€" On a cold and rainy afternoon at Cupp Stadium, the George Washington lacrosse team defeated Radford, 13-7, to wrap up its non-conference slate with a program-best 7-1 record. The historic victory also marks the Colonials' fifth-straight win, marking the longest streak since the squad's inception in 2002.
HOW IT HAPPENED
For the sixth time this season, and second straight game, the Colonials were able to find the back of the net before their opponent, with Katie Quinn opening the scoring just 22 seconds into the game from the free position. The Highlanders got on the board four minutes later with back-to-back goals, but the rest of the half was all GW. The Buff and Blue dominated on the offensive end with a 7-0 run and scored eight of the last nine goals to end the half with a 9-3 advantage. In that span, Jocelyn Donohue registered her third-straight hat trick while Brooke Sands and Quinn added a pair each. The Colonials also closed the half with an impressive 18-8 margin in shots, 8-5 advantage in draw controls, and 8-6 edge in caused turnovers.
After the break, Sands was the first to strike, completing her hat trick and giving GW its 10th goal of the game at the 26:04 mark. The Highlanders, held to just three goals in 34 minutes of play, rebounded with a pair of their own before Quinn netted another free-position goal to give the sophomore a career-high matching trio. The two teams battled up and down the field, with neither squad scoring for 17 minutes, until Radford ended the drought with its sixth of the game with 5:10 left on the clock. The GW defense held strong as Caroline Kierrnan made the final two tallies to cement the 13-7 victory.
NOTEWORTHY
- Quinn's first goal of the game marks the fastest tally of the season, clocking in at 22 seconds into play. Freshman Ioanna Mantzouratos previously held the season-record, scoring at the 29:33 mark in GW's 9-7 victory at Robert Morris.
- Six Colonials found the back of the net in today's matchup. The senior co-captain duo of Sands and Donohue, along with Quinn, all netted a trio, Kiernan scored a pair, and sophomore Christine Weber and Mantzouratos tallied one each. Both Sands and Donohue also finished the day with two assists and five points apiece.
- Kiernan led the squad off the draw, snagging five from the circle. Quinn grabbed three of her own while Sands picked up two and Aidan Cage and Mantzouratos each recorded one.
- Freshman netminder Jenna Oler made her seventh straight start and made eight saves between the pipes.
- On the defensive end sophomore Posie Paoletta picked up two ground balls and caused one turnover, Caroline Esmond caused one turnover, and freshman Cassie Scandalios snagged a trio of ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.
- GW held an advantage in shots (28-20) and draw controls (12-10), while the host Highlanders held a 24-20 edge in ground balls.
