Lacrosse Falls in A-10 Opener

WASHINGTON -- The George Washington lacrosse team dropped its Atlantic 10 opener on Thursday afternoon, falling to Revolutionary Rival George Mason, 25-11, at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Colonials got on the board first, with sophomore Aidan Cage finding a pass from fellow-sophomore Caroline Kiernan to give GW an early lead. Senior Camaryn Kerns gave the Buff and Blue their second tally two minutes later, before the Patriots battled back with a pair of their own. The two teams went on to trades goals for the majority of the half and were tied 8-8 until Mason began to pull away at the 5:53 mark with a 6-0 run to go into the break with a 14-8 advantage.
Mason continued its run into the second half, scoring a quick trio of goals before freshman Ioanna Mantzouratos netted back-to-back tallies just 13 seconds apart. Senior co-captain Jocelyn Donohue found the back of the net one more time for the Colonials, while the Patriots made eight more strikes to finish the day with the 25-11 victory.
NOTEWORTHY
- Mantzouratos and senior Camaryn Kerns led the squad with three goals each, Donohue and Kiernan both registered a pair, and Cage finished the day with one goal.
- Freshman Abby Carlin made a season-high three assists against the Patriots, Kiernan and Mantzouratos followed closely behind with two apiece, and Cage and sophomore Caitlin Concannon each recorded one.
- The Colonials led the Patriots in ground balls, snagging 11 on the day while Mason picked up nine.
- Freshman Arielle Pastore made her first career start in today's matchup.
- Despite trailing in draw controls in the first half (15-6), GW came back to hold an 8-6 advantage in the second stanza.
- Freshman keeper Jenna Oler made nine saves between the pipes while senior Adele Wise made one.
LOOK AHEAD: The Colonials will make the trip up to Olean, New York to take on St. Bonaventure on Saturday at noon.
