BLUFFTON, S.C. -- Playing in its first stroke-play tournament of the spring, the GW golf team was undone by a tough opening round on its way to a 12th-place finish at the Colleton River Collegiate hosted by Michigan State, which wrapped up on Tuesday.
The Colonials shot 325 as a team in the morning round on Monday, then responded by improving their score significantly with a 310 in round two and a 303 in the third round on Tuesday. Yoo Jin Kim (73), Adrian Castangola (75) and Vince Palazzolo (76) each turned in their lowest scorecard in round three, but it wasn't enough to overcome the slow start.
Competing as an individual, Clifford Thompson turned in the best GW finish with a 14-over 230 thanks to consecutive 75s in rounds two and three which left him in a tie for 31st.
Iowa State captured the team championship with a 16-over par 880, while Cincinnati and Miami (Ohio) tied for second at 29-over (893). Brian Ohr of Miami won the individual title with a 1-under par 215, fending off Austin Squires of Cincinnati who turned in an even-par 216. Those were the only two players in the 75-man field not to finish over par at the challenging Colleton River Pete Dye Course, which also plays host to the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and U.S.G.A qualifiers.
The Colonials return to action in a little less than two weeks, at the William & Mary Kingsmill Intercollegiate, March 25-27.
