Former Maryland infielder joins Colonials as transfer
WASHINGTON – GW softball has bolstered its roster ahead of the 2019 season with the addition of sophomore infielder Hannah Eslick, head coach Shane Winkler announced Monday.
A former PGF All-American during her prep career at Glen Burnie High School in Maryland, Eslick joins the Colonials after spending her first collegiate season at the University of Maryland. She will be available to compete this spring and have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
"Our team had an outstanding fall, and it got even better when Hannah decide to join us for the spring," Winkler said. "We have a ton of talent all over the field, but adding a solid bat and her ability to play anywhere in the infield makes us so much stronger.
"Hannah really connected with our program's culture, and I know she's ready to compete for championships over the next three seasons. It's going to be exciting to get her on the field in January with the rest of our team and get back to work. We have a special group here, and it keeps getting better."
Eslick appeared in 42 games with 18 starts last spring for the Terrapins. Her top highlight came Feb. 23 when she launched a home run against then-No. 2 Florida off former USA Softball Collegiate National Player of the Year Kelly Barnhill.
For the season, Eslick drove in eight runs and compiled a .310 slugging percentage with five of her 14 hits going for extra bases.
At Glen Burnie High School, Eslick put together a distinguished prep career, capped by a senior season in which she hit .564 with 18 extra-base hits and 27 RBIs. The decorated slugger earned All-Met honors from the Washington Post four times, including two First-Team selections. She was also recognized by the Baltimore Sun and Capital Gazette after each of her four seasons leading the Gophers.
Eslick joins a GW squad that set a program record with 33 wins last spring and advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Colonials begin the new season on Feb. 8, 2019, with a doubleheader at the Gardner-Webb Tournament.
"I couldn't be more blessed to join this program," Eslick said. "The opportunity to stay close to home is so amazing, and I'm really excited to compete with these girls.
"I'm looking forward to this season because I know this team is hungry to win an A-10 championship. I know we are going to surprise a lot of people this year. I can't wait to be a part of it."
