Men’s Basketball Bit by Catamounts, 69-53

WASHINGTON -- Wednesday night marked a special game for many on the GW staff who have ties to the night's opposition, the Vermont Catamounts, who boast GW Head Coach Maurice Joseph as one of their distinguished alums. Befitting of the emotion, for 30 minutes of game play the contest was deadlocked, as the teams headed into the closing 10 minutes knotted at 48-48.
Vermont came to town ranked 45th nationally in scoring (81.0/game), with junior forward Anthony Lamb leading the team at 20.3 ppg, Stef Smith having accounted for 16.5 ppg and Ernie Duncan contributing 15.2 points per contest. Despite GW holding each of Vermont's Big Three beneath their average, the Catamount bench gave UVM plenty in reserve. Ben Shungu and Everett Duncan each canned a trio of threes in a combined perfect 6-of-6 effort from deep, while fellow benchmate Isaiah Moll canned one, including the first of four three-pointers in four consecutive possessions for Vermont that turned the 48-48 tie into a 60-48 in 2:31 of game time. As a team the visitors drained 11-of-19 three-pointers en route to a 69-53 win. Lamb (16), Shungu (13) and Smith (10) finished in double figures for Vermont.
On the GW side, junior big man Arnaldo Toro was again a monster down low. In his second-straight double-double effort, the Puerto Rico native had a team-high 14 points and 11 boards while sinking all six of his free throw attempts. As a team GW was also perfect at the charity stripe (10-of-10), while Toro led an interior effort that outrebounded the Catamounts, 34-33, and held a 26-18 advantage in the paint. Additionally, the Colonials used 15 offensive rebounds to secure a 19-7 edge in second chance points.
Playing without starting point guard Armel Potter, Maceo Jack drew a starting nod and finished with eight points, including a 2-of-3 outing from deep. Justin Williams came off the bench for a team-high three assists while Justin Mazzulla picked up some of the scoring load with 10.
The road lurks ahead for GW with a trip to traditional Ivy league power Princeton on Saturday at 4pm. The game will be televised regionally on NBC Sports Washington and NBC Sports Philadelphia, and will also be available on ESPN+. The Colonials return home a week from tonight to meet Towson at 7pm.
