Colonials sit second after first day in North Carolina
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Moritz Fath won the 500-yard freestyle Friday, headlining an impressive opening day for George Washington men's swimming and diving at the Queens University Fall Frenzy.
The Colonials piled up 499 points and sit second in the team standings behind the host Royals with two days of racing to go at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. They placed at least three swimmers into the A final of all three of Friday's individual events.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Fath, who won with a season-best time of 4:27.54, was one of three Colonials in the A final of the 500 free, joined by first-years Josh Legge (third) and DH Hwang (sixth). Shawn Lemarie also took 14th for the Buff and Blue.
- Tommi Wolst (1:49.30) and Emils Pone (1:49.48) took second and third, respectively, in the 200-yard individual medley. Youssef Ragab (1:54.93) placed seventh with Andrew Cho in 10th (1:53.78).
- Alexander Auster (20.65) paced four Colonials in the A final of the 50-yard freestyle in second-place. The senior was followed by Charles Sturgeon (fifth), Patrick Lersch (sixth), Dylan Arzoni (seventh).
- Auster, Arzoni, Wolst and Lersch teamed up for a second-place showing behind Queens University in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:22.05).
- The Colonials had teams finish third, fourth and ninth in the 400-yard medley relay. Cho, Wolst, Arzoni and Auster made up the top group, which touched in 3:20.25.
UP NEXT: The meet continues Saturday, with preliminary racing at 10 a.m. followed by finals at 6 p.m., before wrapping up Sunday.
