Women's Swimming & Diving Sits Second at Fall Frenzy

Gemma Atherley and Emily Zhang posted second-place finishes
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - George Washington women's swimming and diving showcased its depth Friday in getting off to a strong start at the Queens University Fall Frenzy.
With 537 points, the Colonials sit second behind the host Royals (691) after the first of three days of racing at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.
GW had at least six scorers in all three individual events contested Friday, headlined by second-place finishes from Gemma Atherley (500-yard freestyle) and Emily Zhang (200-yard individual medley). The Colonials placed three of its teams in the top 10 of the 200-yard freestyle relay and two more in the 400-yard medley relay.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Atherley, a junior from the Channel Islands, grabbed second in the 500 free in 4:55.34. Tali Lemcoff (5:01.50) and Andrea Moussier (5:02.39) also qualified for the A final, taking sixth and seventh, respectively. Erin McCarthy (5:03.75) and Marissa Brannan (5:07.44) qualified for the B final, while Lucy Castro won the C final in 5:07.32 to finish 17th.
- Zhang took second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.23, just behind Queens University's Georgia DaCruz. Jackie Torrez finished fourth (2:04.41), while Isabela Patino landed sixth (2:06.46). Courtney Sicinski (11th), Ann Juneau (17th) and Josie Teat (19th) also qualified for evening finals.
- Rebecca Smolcic paced GW with a fifth-place finish in a season-best time of 23.55 seconds. The Colonials placed five swimmers into the B final in Caroline Racke (9th), Meghan Burton (10th), Grace Olivardia (11th), Patricia Cerri-Droz (14th), Sydney Melnick (15th). Lynn Zhang also scored in the event in 20th.
- Atherley and Zhang teamed with Patino and Andrea Ho for a fifth-place finish in the 400 medley relay in 3:48.21. Atherley was also on GW's second-place 200 free relay team with Racke, Burton and Smolcic.
UP NEXT: The meet, which mirrors the format the Colonials will see in the spring during championship season, continues Saturday and Sunday.
