Colonials ready for three days in North Carolina
George Washington swimming & diving heads to Charlotte, N.C., for three days of racing at the Queens University Fall Frenzy. The Colonials will face off against 14 other schools at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, including the host Royals, who have won four straight Division II national titles on both sides.
All three days will feature preliminary races in the morning followed by a round of evening finals. It's the last competition of the fall for the GW men, while the women have a final dual meet against Richmond at Smith Center Pool before their winter break.
LAST TIME OUT: After celebrating its 13 seniors and unveiling its 2018 A-10 men's championship banner, GW rolled to a dominant sweep of Howard in its home debut last Saturday. The men earned a 161-64 victory, while the women triumphed, 159-72.
Peter Nachtwey provided the top highlight with a record-breaking score of 387.23 on the 3-meter diving board. The sophomore from Ohio was recognized as the A-10 Men's Performer of the Week, part of the program's first-ever sweep of the conference's weekly awards.
Gemma Atherley was named Women's Performer of the Week after posting wins in the 200-yard individual medly and 500-yard freestyle, and Dylan Arzoni and Andrea Moussier both picked up their second Rookie of the Week awards of the fall.
FAST START: A first-year from Mexico, Moussier owns the top times in the A-10 this season in both the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle. She produced her top 500 free time of 5:01.77 at the FIU Fall Classic last month before turning in a season-best time of 10:20.64 in the 1,000 free in the defeat of Howard.
SPRINT TO THE FINISH: Alexander Auster has his senior season off to a strong start. The three-time All A-10 performer recorded the top 50-yard freestyle time in the A-10 (21.16 seconds) in the dual meet at Pittsburgh on Oct. 13. He also swam on GW's top 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays of the season. The Colonials finished the 200 free relay in 1:23.83 at Pitt and the 400 free relay in 3:04.67 at Penn State. Both are conference-best times so far.
SCOUTING THE FIELD: Queens University is set up for another strong season with its women ranked third and men fourth in the latest TYR/CSCAA Division II Polls. Also in the field, Wingate is nationally ranked in both D-II polls, as well. Gardner-Webb and UNC-Asheville are the other Division I programs set to compete.
UP NEXT: The GW women welcome A-10 foe Richmond to Foggy Bottom for a two-day dual meet on Nov. 30-Dec. 1. The Colonials' next full-squad competition is a local tri-meet with American and Georgetown on Jan. 12, 2019.
