Colonials battle Big 12 foe in final non-conference match
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball steps out of conference for the final time in 2018, welcoming the Mountaineers of West Virginia on Tuesday night. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
ABOUT LAST WEEKEND: GW split its matches against Rhode Island and Fordham, sweeping URI in dominant fashion on Friday before stumbling in four sets against the Rams on Saturday. Junior Skylar Iott averaged 3.86 kill/set, while senior Alexis Lete contributed 17 kills and a .467 attack percentage. The Colonials hit .275 as a team on Friday against Rhode Island, the second-highest mark this year.
ACROSS THE NET: West Virginia comes to D.C. for the first time since 1998 on Tuesday. The Colonials own a 22-7 edge over their former A-10 counterparts, but they have only met three times since WVU left the conference following the 1994 season. Most recently, the Buff & Blue swept the Mountaineers in a tournament at Michigan as part of the opening weekend in 2015.
WVU is coming off a five-set loss at Kansas on Wednesday to fall to 1-4 in Big 12 play. The Mountaineers are a strong blocking team, ranking 35th nationally with 2.54 blocks/set. Katie DeMeo is 10th nationally with 1.51 blocks/set individually. Katelyn Evans paces WVU's offense with 3.15 kills/set.
YOUNG GUNS: Heather Merryman became the second Colonial this year to earn A-10 Rookie of the Week honors on Monday, garnering the award after averaging 10.14 assists/set against Rhode Island and Fordham. The average would be second in the league if she had enough sets to qualify. First-year libero Bella Bowman was named Rookie of the Week earlier this year on Sept. 17.
FIVE-SET PHENOMS: Four of GW's eight victories this season have been five-set wins, including a triumph over Morgan State on Sept. 14 in which the Colonials staved off three match points in the third set and came back to win. Dating back to last year, the Colonials have triumphed in eight straight five-set matches and are now 9-2 in those situations under second-year head coach Sarah Bernson.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS: The Colonials are 6-5 outside of conference play this year, highlighted by a 3-1 mark at the Smith Center. GW is already assured of at least a .500 mark in non-conference play for the first time since 2015 when the Buff & Blue were 11-5 against non-league opponents.
