The Colonials took second place in their division at the intercollegiate offshore regatta
The GW sailing team wrapped up a busy weekend which included three regattas across the Eastern seaboard with the action highlighted by a second-place divisional finish at the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta on Long Island Sound.
GW's crew of nine sailors racing a 40-foot keelboat finished behind only Michigan Tech within their division, outpacing Michigan, Syracuse, Kings Point and Wisconsin. Skipper Drew Bennett helped direct the Colonials to a pair of first-place finishes and one runner-up in a total of five races.
At the Coed Showcase on the Charles River in Boston, the Colonials recovered from a slow start on Saturday to finish strong on Sunday but were unable to move into a top-nine finish that would have seen them advance to the Coed Showcase Finals.
"We had really tough conditions on a course we aren't too familiar with so we struggled getting up to pace with everyone else on Saturday," said head coach Billy Martin. "We were probably 45 points back from qualifying going into Sunday and the team worked really hard to improve pretty substantially and finish 23 points out of qualifying. If we would have had more racing I think we could have gotten into a qualifying spot but we just ran out of time."
Finally, at the Tom Curtis Regatta hosted by Georgetown, the Colonials managed a third-place finish behind the host Hoyas and Navy.
"We had a solid performance with some first-year sailors getting their first opportunity at college sailing," said Martin. "Jordan Soenke and Zach Lehan finished third overall to lead the way. It was great to see them sail well and get some good reps in."
