Colonials top Richmond to earn third- straight victory
WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's soccer team finished its week undefeated with a 4-1 victory over Richmond on Sunday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Colonials improve to 8-5-1 on the season, 4-2-0 in A-10 play, with their third consecutive win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 2nd Minute – GW was able to get on the board early with a quick strike from Sofia Pavon, her fourth consecutive goal over three games. Pavon took a cross from Hannah Zaluski and shot the ball into the upper right corner of the net. (GW 1, UR 0)
• 39th Minute – The Colonials were able to pad their lead with a tally from Alexandra Filipkowski, the first of her career. Charley Prevost sped ahead of the Richmond defense on the right side of the field and crossed the ball to Filipkowski, who tipped it in past the reach of the Spiders' keeper. (GW 2, UR 0)
• 54th Minute – GW continued its momentum from the first half with a goal from Natalie Silberman, her third of the season. Pavon fed Silberman a long pass from center field and was able to dart ahead on a breakaway and score to widen the GW lead. (GW 3, UR 0)
• 64th Minute – The Buff and Blue added to their advantage with a tally from Mia Barreda. Barreda deflected the ball into the back of the net off of a pass from Zaluski, her second assist of the day. (GW 4, UR 0)
• 82nd Minute – Richmond got on the board with a penalty kick goal from Keaira Clark. (GW 4, UR 1)
NOTEWORTHY
• Madi Coyne made her first career start for the Buff and Blue against the Spiders, logging 82 minutes of play.
• Filipkowski scored the first goal of her career in today's match. The first-year has appeared in 10 matches this season and tallied a trio shots on the day.
• Pavon put the Buff and Blue on the board with her fourth consecutive goal over three games and fifth tally of 2018. With her goal at the second minute and assist, the senior cements her position as the Colonials' leading scorer with 14 points (5g, 4a).
• The Colonials owned a 13-3 shots advantage going into the break and went on to hold a 21-6 advantage at the conclusion of the match. GW is outshooting its opponents 210-156 in 2018.
• Annie Pierce, Emily Schmid, Uma Bhatt and Sara Messinger all checked in for the first time this season.
