Volleyball Runs Past Rhode Island in Straight Sets

Colonials record second-highest hitting percentage of the year in decisive win
WASHINGTON – GW volleyball opened up a pivotal weekend with a resounding victory, sweeping Rhode Island on Friday night at the Smith Center. GW (8-7, 2-2) evened its conference record while dealing URI (7-9, 1-3) its third conference setback.
GW 3, Rhode Island 0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21)
Key Stats
• The Colonials had their second-best attacking day of the campaign, hitting .275 (42k-14e-102a) in the straight-set romp.
• Junior Skylar Iott led the charge offensively, hitting .414 with 15 kills and just three errors.
• First-year setter Heather Merryman earned her first career start and flourished with 35 assists and four digs.
• Playing just three rotations, sophomore defensive specialist Sydney Welch led the team with 16 digs.
• Senior Alexis Lete hit a team-high .545 with eight kills, while senior Kelsey Clark (8k, .429) and junior Jordan Young (9k, .333) both had strong offensive days.
How it Happened
Set 1: GW 25, Rhode Island 22
• GW fell behind 4-1 to start the match, but quickly responded to grab the lead for good at 8-7. A 12-3 run broke open a 9-9 tie before GW held off a URI run to finish off the set.
• Iott was flawless in the opening stanza, recording five kills without an error on 11 attempts.
Set 2: GW 25, Rhode Island 18
• The Colonials left no doubt in the second set, hitting .406 as a team with just two attacking errors.
• Iott again led the way with five kills, and was joined in the effort by Clark (4 kills), Lete (3), and Young (3). The highlight of the set was a cross-court kill on a tough angle from Iott that evaded the near-side pole and landed just inside the far line.
Set 3: GW 25, Rhode Island 21
• The Colonials rolled again, hitting over .300 en route to its second conference sweep of the year.
• Iott and Lete combined for a pair of blocks before Iott punctuated the match with her 15th kill of the night on a solid set from Merryman.
