Colonials battle George Mason on Thursday
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball is back at the Smith Center this week for the first of three straight home games as the Colonials entertain Revolutionary Rival George Mason on Thursday. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
LAST WEEKEND: The Colonials fell in both ends of their Pennsylvania swing, falling in four sets to La Salle on Friday and suffering a five-set defeat on Sunday at Duquesne. GW is aiming to snap a five-game conference skid entering play this weekend.
ACROSS THE NET: George Mason split last weekend, besting Duquesne in five sets before falling to La Salle. The Patriots come in to play on Thursday in tournament position with a 5-4 conference mark. Mason knocked off GW in four sets on Sep. 28, led by a strong defense that featured 19 blocks in the match.
Bailey Williams leads the Patriots' offense with 2.90 points/set and 2.47 kills/set. Defensively, Catie Espinoza is third in the conference with 4.72 digs/set.
LEE-DING THE WAY: Junior setter Jaimeson Lee has arguably been GW's most complete player this season, leading the team in assists and ranking second in digs and blocks. Lee matched her career-best with 49 helpers on Sunday at Duquesne and also established a new career-high with seven kills and 10 points. Her 16 digs gave her 12 double-doubles on the year.
RARE FIVE-SET DEFEAT: Four of GW's eight victories this season have been five-set wins, but the Colonials dropped their most recent five-set affair on Sunday at Duquesne. Dating back to last year, the Colonials had triumphed in eight straight five-set matches prior to Sunday, but are still 9-3 in those situations under second-year head coach Sarah Bernson.
TOURNAMENT PICTURE: The Colonials will aim to inch closer to tournament positioning with a win on Thursday. GW is two games out of the top-six that qualify for the league tournament with the sixth spot currently held by Duquesne. Of the Buff & Blue's five remaining matches, three are against teams that currently hold a spot in the tournament.
AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS: Here's where the Colonials stand among A-10 foes entering the weekend:
