Colonials to face VCU in quarterfinal round
THE TOURNAMENT: The top eight squads in the Atlantic 10 will compete for the championship crown starting this Saturday as the top-four seeded teams are set to host the first round of postseason play. The tournament then heads to Dayton's Baujan Field for the semifinals and finals Nov. 2-4.
COLONIALS COMPETITION: Saint Louis (15-3-1, 10-0 A-10) claimed the regular-season title after posting an undefeated A-10 season. VCU finished second in the league standings (14-3, 9-1 A-10), followed by Saint Joseph's (13-4-2, 8-2 A-10), George Mason (13-5, 8-2 A-10), Massachusetts (11-5-1, 6-4-1 A-10) and Fordham (9-8-1, 6-3-1 A-10). The Colonials finished ahead of Dayton (8-8-2, 4-5-1 A-10).
A GW win on Saturday would have the Colonials face either third-seeded Saint Joseph's or sixth-seeded Fordham on November 2.
POSTSEASON PLAY: The Colonials will compete in the Atlantic 10 Championship for the sixth consecutive season, tying GW's longest streak in the A-10 tournament since 1993-98, the program's first years as an A-10 competitor.
Last season, GW fell in the quarterfinal round to Duquesne, playing the Dukes to extra time but dropping the match in the 104th minute.
FRESH FOE: GW will take on VCU in the quarterfinal round at Sport Backers Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Colonials will face the Rams for the first time since October 13, 2016, when GW posted a 1-0 victory in overtime.
VCU has dropped only one match in A-10 action and boasts a 7-1 record at home in 2018. Samantha Jerabek paces the squad with 30 points (11g, 8a) and Audrey Sanderson leads the Rams between the pipes with 52 saves and a 0.82 GAA.
Against common opponents, the Rams have posted a 7-1 mark while the Colonials have gone 6-2. Saturday's match will mark the first time the squads go head-to-head in postseason play.
