Colonials celebrate seventh year of Thanksgiving basket collection
WASHINGTON – For the seventh straight year, the George Washington lacrosse team is sponsoring a Thanksgiving basket collection, known as Colonial Harvest, to provide food and toiletries to local families in need during the holidays. This fall, the squad aims to collect 50 Thanksgiving baskets and raise $5,000.
As in years past, the Colonials are collecting laundry baskets filled with non-perishable food items including the typical Thanksgiving staples like canned vegetables, instant mashed potatoes, stuffing mix and cranberry sauce, as well as toiletries such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste and toilet paper.
The food baskets will be donated to St. Rita's Catholic Church in Alexandria, Virginia, with the remaining canned food items going to the Foggy Bottom Food Pantry and The Store, GW's food pantry for students.
Under the direction of head coach Tracy Coyne, the team has expanded the scope of Colonial Harvest each of the past four years. Originally just a fundraiser within the Department of Athletics and Recreation, the team opened up the collection to include the entire university in 2015, including GW faculty and staff and student organizations. Since then, the team has also gone to hand deliver the Thanksgiving baskets to witness the impact the donations have on families.
Last year was the best Colonial Harvest to date, as the team collected 48 Thanksgiving baskets, raised $4,200, delivered 300 pounds of food to the Foggy Bottom Food Panty, and fed over 100 families.
Baskets and monetary donations will be collected in the lobby of the Charles E. Smith Center on Friday, November 2 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Players will also be collecting donations at G-Dub Madness on Friday at 9 p.m.
