Iott’s 28 Kills Not Enough in Volleyball’s Defeat at Duquesne

Colonials fall for first time in last nine five-set matches
PITTSBURGH – GW volleyball built a two-set lead on Sunday in Pittsburgh, but saw Duquesne roar back to win the final three sets and swipe the match in five sets at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
Duquesne 3, GW 2 (33-31, 25-17, 20-25, 11-25, 11-15)
Key Stats
• Junior Skylar Iott had a career day with 28 kills in 59 attempts while attacking at .339. The 28 kills surpassed her previous career-best of 25 set in 2016.
• Junior Jaimeson Lee recorded 49 assists for the third time this season, matching her career high. She also added 16 digs, a career-high seven kills, and four block assists.
• GW (8-13, 2-7) came out strong, recording at least 15 kills in each of the first three sets while hitting .300 in that span. However, the Colonials hit just .078 in the last two sets.
• Duquesne (10-12, 4-5) ended up hitting .320 to GW's .234 over the five sets, and held an 8.0-7.0 edge in blocks. GW held the edge in kills (69-66) and digs (62-59) while the assists were even (63-63).
How it Happened
Set 1: GW 33, Duquesne 31
• The match opened with an incredible set where GW fought off five different set points to win its highest-scoring set since Nov. 9, 2008 at Fordham (also 33-31).
• The Colonials had 20 kills in the set, headlined by Iott, who finished things off with her fifth kill of the set.
Set 2: GW 25, Duquesne 17
• GW grabbed a 2-0 lead behind a potent attack with 15 kills in 30 attempts while hitting .400.
• The Colonials led the set for nearly its entirety, claiming an early 9-4 advantage and not allowing the Dukes closer than three the rest of the way.
Set 3: Duquesne 25, GW 20
• Things changed after intermission as Duquesne committed just one attack error en route to getting back in the match.
• GW's defense, which had notched six blocks in the first two sets, had just one in the third set.
Set 4: Duquesne 25, GW 11
• Duquesne evened the match behind a dominant serve game, recording six aces. The Dukes never trailed and forced a decisive fifth set.
Set 5: Duquesne 15, GW 11
• GW saw its eight-game winning streak in five-set matches come to an end as Duquesne started with a 6-2 edge and held on for the comeback win.
• The Colonials are now 9-3 in five-set affairs under head coach Sarah Bernson.
