Colonials gained valuable experience against top opponents over the weekend
The George Washington sailing team competed in a trio of regattas over the weekend.
GW had a strong showing at the Women's Showcase against a 17-team interconference field. The Colonials, represented by Riley Legault and Alexandra Fayer in the A Division and Aitana Mendiguren and Sarah Noyes in the B Division, pulled off a seventh place finish to advance to the showcase finals.
"The goal was to finish in the top nine and the girls were ready and sailed a great event against some tough competition," said head coach Billy Martin. "This puts them onto the showcase finals. It will be great to see how we do against the top 18 teams in the country. The girls have been sailing great so far this year, so hopefully they keep building on that going into this final month of the fall."
The Colonials also took to the water for the MAISA Match Racing Championship hosted by Kings Point. Though GW did not claim a top-two finish to advance to the ICSA Match Racing Championship, skipper Wade Wagner and crew Cameron Feves, Tanner Chapko, and Andrew Sheerin gained valuable experience on the water. The squad finished sixth in the strong field of eight.
"The field at the Match Race Championship was really tough, but we sailed really well," said Martin. "We had a strong team that we sent there and they put in a great effort, but our result doesn't completely reflect that. We did learn a lot and we'll just keep pushing to get stronger."
GW closed out its weekend with the Danmark Trophy, where the team finished 18th in the field of 20.
"This weekend gave us a chance to compete against some tough teams," said Martin. "We have a lot of big events in October and we're all ready for it."
