2017-18 Schedule
WASHINGTON -- Highlighted by tournaments at a pair of famed courses in 2015 U.S. Open venue Chambers Bay, and the Old White TPC Course which hosts The PGA Tour's Greenbrier Classic, the GW golf team on Friday announced its 2017-18 schedule.
The Colonials will compete in five fall tournaments and six in the spring as a lead up to the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship, which returns to Grand Cypress Golf Club in Orlando for the third consecutive year.
"We're really excited heading into this season," said head coach Chuck Scheinost. "We'll see a mix of competition from the SEC, ACC, Pac-12 and Big Ten, so we'll really be able to test ourselves. I think this year the schedule really steps up the level of competition we're playing while at the same time giving us some opportunities to try and win a couple events."
GW opens the season Sept. 8-10 in the mountains of Colorado Springs, Colorado, with the Air Force Falcon Invitational at Eisenhower Blue Golf Course.
"The Eisenhower Blue is one of my favorite golf courses and the guys will get to hit the ball a long way in the high altitude," said Scheinost. "We'll face some really good west coast teams that will really help us improve."
Familiar venues and opponents will follow with the VCU Janney Invitational (Sept. 18-19) and NC State Wolfpack Invitational (Oct. 2-3), tournaments GW competed in last season.
"VCU and NC State's tournaments are staples on our schedule and always have great teams," said Scheinost. "NC State is also hosting a NCAA Regional at the same course we'll play at in October, so that could be a good preview if we achieve our ultimate goal of winning a conference championship."
GW closes the fall with the Elon Invitational (Oct. 16-17), a tournament where Logan Lowe matched the school's 54-hole scoring record of 207 last year, and the South Carolina Camden Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 21-22).
In the spring, the Colonials will look to improve upon last year's third-place showing at the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championship at Weston Hills Country Club in Miami (Feb. 19-20). In March, GW will compete in the Michigan State Colleton River Collegiate in Bluffton, South Carolina (March 12-13) and the William & Mary Kingsmill Intercollegiate in Newport News, Virginia (March 25-27).
To tune up for the A-10 Championship, the Colonials will play at a pair of challenging venues. The Chambers Bay Invitational will be held April 2-3 in Seattle, before the Colonials head to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, to play in the Greenbrier Invitational April 9-10. The A-10 Championship is slated for April 28-30.
"Last year we played really well in the spring and it was awesome to see the guys break out and showcase what they're capable of," said Scheinost. "To almost win at the App State Bash at the Beach and be in contention throughout the A-10 Championship, shooting a 15-under on the first day, tells us we can compete at the highest level. We're excited heading into the year."
