WASHINGTON -- Rising senior Christian Cichan has been named a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar, while the Colonials received a team academic award from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) for their collective performance in the classroom.
Cichan is one of 260 Division I golfers to earn All-America Scholar status after an impressive year on and off the golf course. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native was second on the team with a 74.74 scoring average while competing in all 12 events for the Colonials.
A business administration major, Cichan's eight rounds of par or better also ranked second on the team, and he recorded two top-10 finishes: an eighth-place showing at the Bash at the Beach Invitational followed by a third-place result at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular in March.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Meanwhile, the Colonials were named an All-Academic Team by the GCAA for maintaining a GPA above 3.0.
Led by a veteran roster that returns all five golfers who competed for GW in the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship, the Colonials are set to open the 2017-18 season Sept. 8-10 at the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
