WASHINGTON â€" On a rainy afternoon at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus, the George Washington Lacrosse team edged St. Bonaventure, 10-9, to open Atlantic 10 conference play.
Senior Cassidy Shollenberger notched her first hat trick of the season to pace the Colonials in the scoring column, while senior Shea Cassidy and junior Jocelyn Donohue netted a pair of goals each, and senior Bailey Forcier, freshman Aidan Cage, and freshman Katie Quinn tallied one goal apiece.
GW (2-6) held a 29-25 edge in shots and dominated in the circle with a 17-4 advantage in draw controls. Freshman Caroline Kiernan led the Colonials off the draw with a season-high six draw controls, while Forcier came in a close second with four of her own.
The Colonials came out hot on the defensive end, forcing the Bonnies to turn the ball over twice in five minutes with back-to-back shot clock violations. St. Bonaventure applied pressure to get on the board first, but GW responded when Brooke Sands took a quick pass from Natalie Maher and found Donohue to even the score and kick start the Colonials offense. GW increased its lead to two at the 14:54 mark with goals from Forcier and Donohue, before the Bonnies fought back to tie the game at three. The two teams traded goals one more time to close the half at 4-4.
The Bonnies got on the board twice after the break, but GW rebounded with an unassisted goal by Cage. St. Bonaventure scored one more time to make it 7-5 at the 22:10 mark before the Colonials fired back with a 6-0 run of their own. The Bonnies scored two more times, but the Colonials held off the St. Bonaventure offense in the final 1:11 to clinch the 10-9 decision.
Junior keeper Adele Wise played all 60 minutes in between the pipes and made eight saves.
The Colonials will look to stay hot in conference play this weekend as they head to take on Davidson at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
