WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team opens Atlantic 10 Conference play over the weekend with a three-game series with Dayton beginning on Saturday at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (13-11) have won six of their last seven games and most recently swept Buffalo in doubleheader action on Tuesday at home. Dayton (12-13) visits the District for a Saturday doubleheader and a single game on Sunday to wrap a 10-game homestand for the Buff and Blue.
GW leads the A-10 with a .325 team batting average and is tied for second in the league with 19 home runs. Dayton is the only other squad in the conference batting over .300 (.301) entering the weekend.
Freshman Jenna Cone has already tied the program's single-season home run record with a league-best 11 round-trippers. Cone also sits atop the A-10 with 35 RBIs and ranks fourth with 22 runs scored.
Priscilla Martinez is reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week after batting .471 in five games last weekend. The catcher owns a .325 overall average on the year with 17 RBIs and ranks second on the team with three homers.
In the circle, junior Sarah Costlow leads GW with a 6-3 record and a 2.44 ERA, tossing eight complete games and holding opposing hitters to a .235 average. As a staff, the Colonials own a 3.61 ERA and have held foes to a .264 average.
The Flyers have dropped their last three games, most recently falling in a pair of mid-week games by one run to Wright State. Dayton's Manda Cash (7-6, 2.40 ERA) leads the A-10 in strikeouts (87).
