The GW sailing program competed in a trio of regattas over the weekend with a fourth-place finish at the St. Mary's Team Race highlighting the action.
GW's team of skippers Brendan Shanahan, Kai Friesecke and Andrew Sheerin, and crews Mercedes McPhee, Edward D'Eliscu and Matt Homa, compiled a 7-5 record at the event to finish behind Boston College, Navy and Hobart & William Smith. The Colonials, who have their first-ever national ranking in team racing at No. 8, edged out a number of ranked opponents including No. 2 College of Charleston, No. 11 Stanford, No. 13 St. Mary's and No. 14 Roger Williams.
"This was our best event of the weekend," said head coach Billy Martin. "It was good to see us compete that well against conference rivals as we prepare for conference championships. We got a lot of good looks at them and there's a lot to be happy about."
At the Navy Spring Women's, GW had a strong start to the event as it won three out of the first 12 races to sit in second place after one day of competition. However, on Sunday the Colonials dropped to finish 16th out of 20 teams.
"I think we learned a lot of lessons and a lot about ourselves," said Martin. "There were a lot of good learning points but obviously it wasn't the result we were looking for."
Finally, GW competed in another team race event at Georgetown, with a team of mostly freshmen and sophomores combining to finish seventh out of eight teams.
"We had a lot of young sailors at this event as we continue to get more experience in team racing, so it was good for them to be in this competition," said Martin.
The Colonials will spend spring break training in Washington before heading to the Navy Team Race and St. Mary's Women's Interconference this coming weekend.
