WASHINGTON -- The George Washington lacrosse team received four goals from Jocelyn Donohue but UMBC proved to have too much offensive firepower to overcome as the Colonials were handed a 17-8 defeat Saturday afternoon at the GW Lacrosse Field.
The Retrievers (3-1) got six goals from Sam Nolan and four apiece from Lauren McDonald and Payton Van Kirk, and held a 38-18 advantage in shots including 19-5 in the second half.
GW (0-4) was even with UMBC midway through the first half when Cassidy Shollenberger scored unassisted to tie it 3-3, but the Retrievers responded with a 4-0 run to assume control. Donohue tallied her third goals of the half at the 2:05 mark before UMBC struck with 18 seconds left to take an 8-4 lead into halftime.
After the intermission, Nolan scored twice in an 11-second span and UMBC built an 11-4 lead before Donohue connected for her fourth and final goal with 19:49 to play. The Retrievers continued to apply pressure by virtue of an 18-9 advantage in draw controls, including 10-4 in the second half, to put the finishing touches on the win.
In the cage, Adele Wise recorded 11 saves, while she and Bridget Cassidy snagged four ground balls apiece as the Colonials matched UMBC in that regard, 21-21. In addition to Donohue, Shollenberger also had a multi-goal game with two while Bailey Forcier and Brooke Sands had one apiece.
The Colonials return to action Wednesday when Navy visits the GW Lacrosse Field for a 3pm tilt.
