Lacrosse Falls at Longwood, 11-9

FARVMVILLE, Va. â€" The George Washington lacrosse team dropped its first road game of the season to Longwood, 11-9, on Saturday afternoon at the Burger Jackson Field in Farmville, Virginia.
Freshman Christine Weber and senior Michaela Lynch each scored twice for the Colonials, while seniors Shea Cassidy, Cassidy Shollenberger and Bailey Forcier, and freshmen Caroline Kiernan and Katie Quinn tallied one goal apiece.
The Colonials picked up 24 ground balls and held a 24-20 advantage behind a team-high seven by senior Becca Taub, three by Forcier and three by Lynch.
GW took a 2-0 lead early in the game after Quinn put the Colonials on the board with an unassisted goal. Twenty-four second later, Shollenberger took a pass from Lynch and converted it to increase the GW lead. Longwood responded with a 3-0 run of its own, before Kiernan fired back with an unassisted goal to tie the game with 17:32 left in the half. The Lancers found the back of the net once again, but Lynch evened the score with a goal of her own. Longwood scored twice more and held a 6-4 halftime advantage.
The teams traded early goals to start the second half for an 8-5 margin, but the Colonials offense pushed back with a 4-0 run to take a 9-8 lead with 8:31 left in the game. The Lancers rebounded, scoring the final three goals of the game to take the 11-9 decision.
Junior goalkeeper Adele Wise stopped seven shots between the pipes, while Longwood goalie Imani West recorded 19 saves. The Colonials made 34 shots in the game, outshooting the Lancers, 34-20.
The Colonials return home next weekend to host UMBC at 1 p.m. at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
